Lord of the Flies

The setting in Lord of the Flies is on an island. The island setting is very important in this novel. If it was not on an island, everything would have changed. The plot would have been much different, because they would've resolved the problem much faster. Without adults on the island, the kids have to make their own rules, but if they weren't on a island, and they were in the city somewhere, they could have easily found adults in the city to help them. This island setting is ideal for Lord of the Flies. Everything happens on this island. The main plot in Lord of the Flies is that some kids that were in a plane during the plane crash survived, and after they realized that there were no adults on the island, they had to make their own rules and vote for a kid chief. None of this would have happened if the setting wasn't on an island. We know that there was a storm because the fat boy said that the "storm dragged it (tree trunk) out to sea" (Golding 8). When they first got on the island, there was a huge storm that blew away a lot of tree trunks. This weather sets the mood, which is desperation, because the school boys eagerly want to find adults. The author does not tell us directly that is a morning but we can infer that is is morning because we know that Ralph can see the birds in the jungle, and we also know that there was a storm the night they crashed, and this was the next day. The kids on the island seem to feel excited, scared, and isolated at the same time. There is a dark scary forest (danger, scary), a bright "shimmering" lagoon (excitement), and a wide open sea (isolation). All of these 3 things were explained by the author and by the characters during the beginning of the book so that the readers would know how the characters feel about the setting.
